Pit and fissure sealing is one of the most effective preventive dental treatments during childhood. The deep grooves found on the chewing surfaces of molars are often difficult for toothbrush bristles to reach properly, which makes these areas more susceptible to tooth decay.
During the treatment, these grooves are sealed with a special protective material, preventing bacteria and plaque from accumulating. The procedure is quick, painless, does not require drilling, and takes only a few minutes.
Pit and fissure sealing is most commonly recommended after the eruption of the permanent molars: generally at the age of 6–8 for the first molars and at 11–13 for the second molars. When performed at the appropriate time, the treatment can provide long-term protection against tooth decay, helping to maintain the health of the permanent dentition.

Tooth decay often develops as a result of bacteria multiplying at the bottom of deep grooves on the chewing surfaces.
A newly erupted molar is naturally free of decay, but its system of grooves is already present. Pit and fissure sealing is most effective when performed on newly erupted, decay-free molars. The deep grooves are cleaned and then filled with a light-cured material, which is subsequently cured with a dental curing light.
The material completely fills the groove system, preventing subsequent bacterial infection. No drilling is required, the procedure can be completed in just a few minutes, and it is virtually invisible.
